NaNoWriMo 2017: Crawling into starting position

November 2, 2017

 NaNoWriMo 2017!!!

Considering that Day One started out with me floundering around on 4 broken hours of sleep, I think my grueling and off-handed start to NaNoWriMo was wholly predictable ('specially for me, because I'm already a known procrastinator unless I'm feeling inspired. Yes, I own it. Also, sorry. Truly. I try my best. This is why I do things like this to myself; to force me to try harder and do better.)

*clears throat loudly* Anyway, as expected I started off clumsily and in somewhat of a daze, mostly due to the lack of sleep and pounding headache making me dizzy as all Hades with a hangover (and no, I wasn't drinking... unfortunately. At least then I'd have a valid reason for feeling like a shit-ball being kicked across a minefield.)

First thing on the agenda was going over the latest version of the outline and re-reading the chapters I have already completed. Currently, there are 8 "finished" chapters at about 21,000 words.

You can see below where I've posted the current word counter. I will try to update it the end of each writing day on the blog sidebar as well. Starting at 20,000 the aim is to add at least another 50,000 by the end of the month (preferably more, but we'll see!) so I set the target total to 80,000 just to push myself a little harder.

1120 / 60000 words. 2% done!

For those of you scratching your heads and mouthing "NaNoWriMo?" with a puzzled expression:

NaNoWriMo is a month long event where both fledgling and professional writers alike commit to writing 50,000 words within the month of November (30 days). It is a shortening of "National Novel Writing Month" and has participants all over the world.

While I didn't do a dramatic amount of actual writing yesterday (outside of the blog post, but I'm not counting that haha!) I did get the enormous and messy project that is "Firechild" and its dozens of revisions and changes over the past twenty years, organized and ready to roll.

Yeah, you read that right... I started this bitch two decades ago and I've never gotten over it. I've evolved with the story and it has evolved with me. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to rest until it's finally finished. *shakes head miserably at self* Enough rambling though - while Day One was messy and under-productive I managed to crash like a meteor into the cushions of my couch and wedge myself there for a good solid 12 hours of sleep (only slightly disrupted, because c'mon, I have kids!) So far, Day Two has moved much more smoothly. Keeping my fingers crossed the rest of the day remains on the up!

For all the other writers doing NaNoWriMo:

I wish you feverishly inspired stories that pour out in waves, and equally speedy typing fingers! Good Luck To All!!!

Until tomorrow,
