"Dust on Brown Shoes"

 "Dust on Brown Shoes"

After, he went back

A desperate need to record

We cannot forget

Never scrub the memories

                from our minds

But he needed to capture it

(the after)

so that when we remember

                          it is vivid

the pain we felt

must be remembered that way

When he returned home

he had brought the pain with him

covering his shoes

in a thick white and gray

layer of dust

And he refused to wash them.

"The dust," he said, "was body

steel, glass, memory

all destroyed together

in one moment

and mixed

into this layer of pain that

covers us."
